In a series of violent confrontations Friday, a gunman with a semiautomatic rifle killed four people and wounded at least five others before being shot dead by police inside the Santa Monica College library, police said.
Santa Monica Police Sgt. Richard Lewis said in a news briefing late Friday that a lone gunman carried out the shootings, which resulted in nine crime scenes that spanned several blocks.
"It's a horrific event, and everyone wishes it hadn't happened," Lewis told the press.
Lewis also confirmed a "person of interest," who was taken into custody earlier in the day, "has been released and is not a suspect."
One of the dead was shot outside the library of the two-year college, where students were studying for or taking final exams.
The gunman, who was not immediately identified, was described as white or Latino with curly hair and 20 to 30 years old. Witnesses said he was dressed in black, wore body armor and a helmet and brandished a military-style assault rifle, a shotgun, a handgun and an ammunition belt.
He was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in the library as students dived for cover or ran for safety. Beforehand, students, many wearing headphones, either did not hear or ignored several "pops."
The 38-acre main campus remained locked down throughout the afternoon while the bomb squad examined suspicious bags the gunman left behind. The lockdown was lifted late Friday, but the school remains closed.
Three women in a car were shot and wounded during what the Santa Monica police called a "series of random encounters." One later died at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Another victim was in critical condition and one was in fair condition Friday night, the university hospital said.
Three other women, including one shot in a car, were treated for minor injuries at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica. One had shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire. All were treated and released.
The series of incidents -- Santa Monica police said at least nine -- began when a gunman shot up and set fire to a home located about a mile from campus.

Capt. Jason Wells, of the Santa Monica Fire Department, said late Friday that the cause of the fire is undetermined, but is being investigated due to the suspicious circumstances.
Two bodies were found in the house on Yorkshire Avenue, a fire department spokesman told the Associated Press. At least one of the two men died from gunshots, sources told KABC-TV.
Neighbors told KNBC-TV that the gunman's father and brother lived in the home.
Jerry Cunningham Rathner, who lives nearby, told AP that she heard gunshots shortly before noon and then saw a man shooting at the neighbors' home. The residence quickly erupted in flames and billowing smoke.
She said the gunman then went to the corner and pointed a military-style rifle at a woman in a car, ordering her to pull over. He then motioned to another car to slow down before opening fire.

Santa Monica gunman killed father, brother, sources say

UPDATE: Police say five, not seven, dead in shooting; gunman acted alone
The two bodies found in a burning Santa Monica house – the starting point in a shooting rampage – are believe to be the brother and father of the suspected gunman, law enforcement sources told The Times.
Six people were killed in the rampage, and police say the suspect used an AR-15 assault rifle.
He was killed by officers at Santa Monica College. Police don’t have a motive for the shootings. The shooting and fire appear to have stemmed from some type of family dispute, but the sources said police are still are from sure what happened.
Santa Monica College remained closed. And police were converging on an apartment in Mar Vista as part of the shooting investigation.
Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks described a violent shooting rampage that appears to have begun in the 2000 block of Yorkshire Avenue just before noon.
The gunman then moved west along Pico Boulevard, firing at cars and other targets.

As many as six victims were killed and two to three others injured Friday in a series of shootings near a community college in Santa Monica, Calif., west of Los Angeles, authorities said. The suspected shooter was shot and killed by officers at the scene and authorities have another suspect in custody, they said.
The shootings took place near where President Barack Obama was scheduled to attend a fundraising event. FBI agents responded to the scene, but the Secret Service said the shootings were believed to be unrelated to the president's visit.
Investigators gave no indication of a possible motive.
Dr. Marshall Morgan, at the Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said in a news conference hours after the shootings that one of three victims -- all women -- brought to the trauma center with gunshot wounds had died.  One other was still in surgery and another was listed in serious condition, he said.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — A gunman with an assault-style rifle killed at least six people in Santa Monica on Friday before police shot him to death in a gunfight in the Santa Monica College library, authorities said.
Santa Monica Police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks told reporters the rampage began at a house in the coastal city before the gunman, dressed all in black, made his way to Santa Monica College.
Seabrooks said he killed two people in the house, which caught fire, two more people as he moved several blocks toward the campus, and then two more on campus.
He entered the library and fired on other people but didn't hit them, Seabrooks said.
Several students in the library reported hearing gunfire, and one witness said he heard a woman scream.
"The officers came in and directly engaged the suspect and he was shot and killed on the scene," Seabrooks said.
She identified the gunman as 25 to 30 years old and dressed all in black, wearing what appeared to be a ballistic jacket.
The campus was searched for a second shooter, and a man dressed entirely in black, with the words "Life is a Gamble" on the back of his sweatshirt, was seen being taken into custody by law enforcement officers. He did not appear to be wounded.
"We are not convinced 100 percent that the suspect who was killed operated in a solo or alone capacity," Seabrooks said.
All of this unfolded about 3 miles from where President Barack Obama was attending a fundraising luncheon.
Three women with gunshot wounds were admitted to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said Dr. Marshall Morgan, the chief of emergency medicine. One died, another was in surgery, and the third was in serious condition but doing well, he said.
Three other women went to UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica with relatively minor injuries, Morgan said. One has shrapnel-type injuries and the two others had injuries not related to gunfire, he said.
Jeff Furrows of the Santa Monica Fire Department said there was extensive fire damage inside the home where two bodies were found, and one of the wounded women was found with a gunshot wound in a car nearby.
Jerry Cunningham Rathner, who lives near the house, said she heard gunshots and came out onto her porch to see a man shooting at the residence. Soon, the building erupted in flames and was billowing smoke.
The gunman, dressed in black and wearing an ammunition belt, went to the corner and pointed a rifle at a woman in a car and told her to pull over, Rathner said. He then signaled to a second car, also driven by a woman, to slow down and began firing into the vehicle.
"He fired three to four shots into the car - boom, boom, boom, right at her," said Cunningham, who went to the woman's aid and saw she was wounded in the shoulder.
"I can't believe she didn't have worse injuries," Cunningham said.
She said the gunman then abducted the woman in the first car and drove away.
