A homeless dog's transformation: sick, sad and lonely on the streets, he is rescued and turns into a joyful dog surrounded by friends. This little dog was living in a cardboard box, on the streets and was in a very bad shape when we rescued him. We do not know if he ever had an owner as he didn’t have a microchip but taking into account his skin condition, he seemed to have been roaming the streets for a very long time: full of fleas, he developed an allergic dermatitis which led to hair loss on some parts of his body (especially on his neck and back). Untreated, it progressed, became chronic and got infected with Malassezia, a yeast that also caused him otitis. We had him on specific medication and medicated shampoos, but hair has still to grow on the affected areas. Except for the stubborn skin problem that we hope will be solved, Buzu is a healthy dog. He is ~5-6 years old, still a little shy with people he doesn’t know, very submissive and calm. He’s not very interested in exploring new territories and feels safer in the areas he knows, he likes to take a few runs in the garden, then to relax in the sun. He is friendly with other dogs and his best friend is a cat :) He appreciates most the things he didn’t have on the street: love, food and security. He is the kindest dog we’ve ever met and it’s so hard to understand how could have someone abandoned him and why he had been on the streets for so many years. Shavi was left to die by the side of the road after the crash, in southern Russia’s Rostov Oblast region last winter.

She had been living on the streets as a stray when the driver hit her, and then just drove away, Russian media reported.

He left Shavi to die in agony with two broken legs by the side of the road, where she was shivering and freezing.

But luckily, two passersby saw the animal and took her to the vet, before appealing online for someone who could care for her as she recovered.

Brian, who has three ears, is believed to be between four and ten years old.

We’ve all heard about cats having nine lives but have you heard the one about the cat with three ears?

Staff at a Norfolk rescue centre were equally perplexed when one intrepid feline arrived sporting an extra ear.

As Feline Care Cat Rescue in East Harling continue to care for the moggie, it is hoped its owner will now step forward. Brian, as he has been affectionately called, arrived at the centre on Monday after being caught in one of the centre’s traps after setting off security alarms at a nearby business.
Manager of the centre, Molly Farrar, said: “We expected it to be one of our own cats who’d been causing problems so this handsome, mature gentleman was quite a surprise to us.
“We’ve cared for plenty of cats with one eye, three legs or six toes and several cats with no tail left, but this is our first three-eared cat.

The centre is hoping that Brian has not been dumped but has simply got lost.
Miss Farrar, 38, said: “He’s obviously very distinctive with his extra little ear so someone must be missing him or recognise him.

“He’s in a bit of a tatty and skinny state. He’s been in the wars a bit and has a fractured canine tooth and ear mites so he obviously needs looking after.

Marnie the dog – a 13-year-old Shih Tzu known for her ever-present tongue and head tilt – has risen from a stray to a star. Now, the Instagram celebrity is using her fame to advocate for senior pups like her.


Shirley Braha, who adopted Marnie three years ago, is using her dog’s growing popularity to shed light on the adoption of senior dogs. She’s created a fund – Marnie’s Old Pals – to help senior dogs in shelters receive necessary veterinary care.


To celebrate Marnie’s 13th birthday and the launch of her new book, Braha’s group held its first fundraiser on Monday night in New York, and asked those who attended to donate $5 to the fund.

“I think it’s just as important to raise awareness about how great it is to welcome a homeless senior dog into your life,” Braha said. “They tend to be calm and sweet and, above all, extremely grateful to get out of a terrifying situation and have a new loving home.”

According to the ASPCA, approximately 7.6 million animals enter shelters nationwide each year. Of those, 3.9 million are dogs and approximately 1.2 million have to be euthanized.

When an adorable seal named Celebration was only a few days old, she found herself already fighting for her life: After being separated from her mother, the baby was stuck in the mud in Frampton Marsh nature reserve in the UK.

Luckily, help quickly arrived on the scene, but Celebration's rescuers were certainty not who you'd expect. Ian Ellis, who was bird-watching nearby, spotted a herd of 30 cows all gathered in one area. Upon closer inspection, he was surprised to see a little seal pup in the middle of the group.

That’s Russian man Anatoly Tuptey speaking with The Siberian Times after the animal-lover braved treacherous conditions to save to kittens trapped in an oil spill.

“My soul could not stand the cries, I went to see. You never know what is going on, I had to check,” said Tuptey after an oil spill in Nefteyugansk, Russia (we can’t pronounce it either).

Tuptey reportedly waded into the oil to rescue the kittens then, using his t-shirt, dried them off and kept them warm.

A retired police dog who was likely destined for euthanasia has been spared after animal lovers condemned the police department’s decision to send him to a municipal shelter.

The 9-year-old Belgian Malinois, Rex, had served with the Albuquerque Police Department since 2013, and spent several years in the military before that, the Albuquerque Journal reports. Rex was present during the shooting of homeless man James Boyd that led to criminal charges for two APD officers, and appears in video of the incident.

When Rex’s handler, Scott Weimersckirch, retired, the APD said Rex was too old and too bonded to Weimersckirch to be transferred to another handler. But the officer couldn't adopt Rex due to concerns that the dog would be a threat to his young child, APD spokeswoman Celina Espinoza told local news station KRQE.

A city shelter took Rex in, but the APD said Monday it was likely the dog would be euthanized, since his military and police background would make finding a suitable home difficult.

The story Anne Graber heard was that Bjarni -- the smiling dog with half a nose -- was found roaming the streets by an animal control officer.

He had a family, but when they were contacted, they said they didn't want him back. So Bjarni was brought to a local shelter.

This part Graber knows for sure: Shelter staff reached out to Graber, who is the founder of a Texas-based animal rescue group called St. Francis' Angels, and asked her if she could help.
Graber immediately said that she'd make sure this dog was loved and made whole.

"He will remain with us until such time he has fully recovered and been adopted," she says.

Graber says this gorgeous boy is having a hard time eating and breathing, since what nose he has left is covering his sinus cavities.

But his personality is intact. He loves to play with other dogs. He loves to be around people. He loves, all around.

"Vivacious and engaging. He is totally unaware of his limitations and disfigurement," Graber said. "He loves everything that moves."

The French animal rights group, Cause Animal Nord, has come under fire after a video emerged of the activists taking away a puppy from a crying homeless man in central Paris.

The video shows the man fighting for his dog, but eventually losing out as three members of the group, including the organization’s president, seized the puppy and ran away. The homeless man was left in tears.

 

The cruel act has been condemned by the media and internet users. A number took to social networks to express their disgust, while others left highly critical messages on the organization’s Facebook page.

Eleven seal pups were released back into the wild Friday after being rescued and rehabilitated at the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue Centre.

The harbour seal pups, many of which were sick, injured or orphaned before they were rescued over the summer, were released into Burrard Inlet from Cates Park in North Vancouver on Friday morning to the delight and collective "awws" of dozens of rescue workers and onlookers. 

Emily Johnson, manager of the Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, said her heart swelled with pride seeing the seals make their way back into the sea Friday.

She said each seal seemed to have its own unique personality, with some raring to go once the gates of their crates were opened, while others appeared to be less enthused.

According to Friday's Click 2 Houston News, a dog who was dumped at a Yonkers, N.Y., animal control when she was just a puppy, is still without a home, seven years later.
Tanya, a mastiff mix, is now pushing eight years of age, and since the time that she was just six-months-old, she has not had a family of her own. Mr. Bones & Company, a non-profit animal welfare agency in New York City, is working hard to change that for this special dog.
Mr. Bones & Company posted the following words of hope for Tanya on their Facebook page on Thursday afternoon:

There have been many stories of survival come out of the April 27 tornadoes that devastated many communities in Arkansas. Towns like Vilonia and Mayflower are now left to pick up the pieces as neighborhoods were left shattered, causing a loss of both human and pet lives.
Out of this tragedy there are a few miracles taking place with the pets misplaced. One such story is that of a dog found wandering Tuesday in Vilonia. As it turns out, this old guy is 15 years old.
Now under the care of Fuzzy Hearts Rescue, he's in a foster home due to his owner's losing their home. The house was leveled, and the family had nowhere to go.
Even though this sweet senior had difficulty walking with bad hips, plus being stressed out from the trauma, his family had feared he was killed by debris. They're so relieved he's safe, and being cared for until they can find a place where he can rejoin them.

On April 24, a 19-year-old man from Brasil posted a desperate ad on Craigslist pleading for someone to adopt his dog from an animal control facility in northern California - the ad read:

FREE DOBERMAN (san mateo) CA
PLEASE HELP MY DOG
my Doberman/pitbull has been captured by the aspca when she got away one night when I was on a trip unfortunetly they capture my 9 yr old boxer too (I love her to death)
I could only pay the fee for my boxer to get out witch is $90 (im paying for)
but my biggest concern is that since they have been there for a while tthey want to charge me $150 just for my Doberman and if we don't nothing about it my 4-24-14 by 4:00 they will put her to sleep
I can't afford to take both of them out so im posting this asking anyone out there if you want the Doberman for the impound fee of $150
but the final day would be at 4-24-14 at 4pm any later than that they will put her to sleep
the Doberman is less than a year old she doesn't like cats but she is very sweet to kids, and other dogs please reply as soon as possible

Rescuers in the area saw the ad and they took it upon themselves to make sure that the dogs were not killed - several women went to Facebook with a plea for funds and within hours, enough money had been raised to spring the dogs from the animal control facility.

Those of us in the animal world are well aware of the atrocities of puppy mills.
The filthy conditions, lack of clean water, food, and veterinary care, the loneliness and neglect the animals suffer. Which is why it's wonderful to hear of puppy mill dogs who are rescued and get to spend the rest of their lives in a loving home.
Two such survivors, Harley, 13, and Teddy, 8, are doing more than enjoying their freedom, however. On April 26, they're leaving for a trip (not their first) with National Mill Dog Rescue (NMDR) to save other puppy mill dogs. This Midwest mission, dubbed 'Harley to the Rescue,' has a goal of saving more than 50 dogs.
'Harley to the Rescue' started as a campaign to raise $2,500 to fund one rescue of 25-30 dogs. As of today, these brave Chihuhuas have raised over $150,000 and have rescued 265 dogs from mills. Watch video (Here).

A beloved dog who vanished during the huge firestorm which engulfed San Diego in 2007 has been reunited with his family.
John Hartman and his family not only lost their home during the firestorm but also their black Labrador retriever Buddy. 
Soon after the fires, someone found the two-year-old Lab and took him to a vet's office but the dog escaped. The Hartmans moved to Oklahoma but never gave up on their beloved Buddy.

However by an amazing stroke of luck, the Hartmans received a call from the Department of Animal Services during a recent trip to San Diego to see their son. Long-lost Buddy, now ten, had been found.
The dog had been found running loose in the Imperial Beach neighborhood and was dropped off at Gaines Street Animal Shelter on March 28.
